Assignment 5-1

Wakey wakey eggs and bakey...

I hear the ring; yep it is 7:10am and time to get up for work. I sit up and take a second to try and adjust my eyes before I make my way to the shower. I quickly take the hottest shower my skin can handle. Once I am done, I put on my usual face creams and then proceed to do my makeup. Hair is the next daunting task, which I never seem to get right, and so I try to move on from the mess I made with bobby pins, hairspray and more hairspray. I make my way into the kitchen and make my cup of boiling morning green tea. I will kiss my sweetie goodbye for the day and he takes off.  I will sit on the couch in my pajamas for the next half hour and watch the morning CBS news and try to prepare my self for the exhausting day ahead.
You probably don’t care about my morning routine but for me it’s a ritual to some degree. On the days where for some reason my alarm doesn’t go off, it seems as if the day is ruined if I can’t fit in my morning tea. It sounds somewhat mellow dramatic I know, but this morning schedule for me is my time to wind down and prepare myself for the day. So do you have a morning ritual like this?  I would love to hear about it!

Journal Analysis Assignment 1-3

Journal AnalysisTwilight and Philosophy: Vampires, Vegetarians, and the Pursuit of Immortality. Eds. Rebecca Housel and J. Jeremy Wisnewski. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, 2009.

Twilight and Philosophy: Vampires, Vegetarians, and the Pursuit of Immortality, this interesting journal with a great title sucked me in the moment I saw it (no pun intended). I myself have never been the biggest fan of the Vampire epidemic, so to speak. I will sit through the movies and yes I have read the Twilight series, but really wasn’t sold on the idea of a plain Jane girl falling in love with a beautiful vampire who eats bunnies for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Not my exact idea of romance.
Aside from my opinion on the vampire craze it is hard to not notice why some would like the new age vampire books, movies and television shows. They all feature handsome looking men with charming personalities who capture the love of young, naïve and somewhat insecure women. You want their love to work out and we keep reading and watching to see if true love will prevail!
The book Twilight and Philosophy is a deeper look into the characters of the gothic novels and is a collection of writings from philosophers and even a high school student.  In the article it talks about the movie Dracula being taught in literature and film classes. Dracula was made in the late 1800’s when society wasn’t so lax. I have actually heard of courses such as the title of this book being offered at colleges and universities.  Sounds like a fan club with a pricy admission fee to me!

Assignment 3-1

XOXO Gossip Girl...

Yes, Gossip Girl is one of my many guilty pleasures. As a TV junky I know what makes a good show and this show is good. The show portrays the lives of the young and old of the upper west side of Manhattan, New York. The interesting characters whose lives are ever so fabricated make you think that everyone in the upper west side lives a luxurious life with all ease.  The young adults that are featured in the show are attending the finest of schools including Columbia and NYU. They attend New York fashion week and weekly events and gala's and portray that being in the social limelight will provide everything you need to be happy in life. If only.
A favorite character of mine is Blair Waldorf. She has a history of being the backstabbing friend whose life goal is to make it to the top in the cruel social world. She is considered the Queen Bee of the show and I think I like her so much because she is the complete opposite of everything I am and that intrigues me. She connives people and will do anything to get her way including hurting the people she loves. She is fascinating and I suggest you check her character out. This show may just suck you in as much as it does to me!!

Wonderful Women...

Assinment 3-2

Oprah Winfrey, you can say her name and everyone knows who she is. All around the world she is known for her great success and generous philanthropy projects. Marilyn Monroe an actress who took everyone by surprise in the 1950’s by working her way up from a struggling model to a celebrity starlet. Lastly, Emily Dickinson, a shy and secluded poet who shared remarkable words and stories and was only well known after her death. These three women are remarkable in their own ways, and in common, they all are a few of history’s most well known icons.
Oprah Winfrey has been represented as a kind and generous woman, not only in America but all around the world. Even with rough times throughout her childhood and adolescent years, she has overcome the hardships and has become one of the most successful women in the world. This grand title gives some hope to everyone who sees her as inspiration. She goes after what she believes in and stays a true and honest woman.
Marilyn Monroe also grew up with many disadvantages. She was passed from different orphanages to foster homes throughout her childhood. This woman knew from a young age that to get where she wanted to be she had to do anything to get noticed. She became a notorious actress with dreams of only becoming an even bigger starlet. Sadly through suicide, her life was cut at a young age.
Emily Dickinson grew up in much different circumstances. She lived in an affluent college town where her father was a lawyer and congressman. She was a shy and timid girl who kept to herself. She had few friends and her interest in writing and reading kept her busy, not only as a child but also throughout her life. She passed away at the young age of 55 and this was when all of her wonderful creations were discovered and after many years they were shared with the world.
These women are a few of history's notorious icons. Whether they were or are well loved or criticized in their time, they prevailed and their memory will last forever. As a young woman who has no desire to become famous or known like these woman are, they really make me look more carefully into what I am doing with my life. Am I following my dreams? Am I doing something that will one day be noticed and appreciated by someone else? I wonder if you asked these questions to a young Oprah, Marilyn, or Emily what there answers would be. Hmmmm…

Say Cheese!

Assignment 1-2

Pop culture, short for popular culture, is to put simply the fads, trends, events, current cultural trends and even people that captivate our society. Pop culture is everything in today’s society. Do you really think all of those magazines on the supermarket shelves would exist without it? No!
Having an understanding to pop culture in ones past, current and future career is detrimental to success. For example, a magazine photographer needs to know the latest trends in fashion and hair to have a successful shoot. Granted I am most positive that the photographer would have a team that would also be up to date on all of those issues.
Being up to date on technology is also part of pop culture. Today’s world relies on technology. For the magazine photographer to be successful in their career, they would need the best digital camera and an amazing computer and software to edit the photos they capture.
I feel that the camera is a huge artifact of pop culture. The camera has greatly evolved overtime. Once being a luxury item to families in the nineteenth century to becoming a simple gadget we access on our phones.  Everything we do or see is related in some way or another to the camera. Say cheese!

Sophomore Season of Glee.

Assignment 1-4

"It's a Britney Spears sex riot", this was just one of the many one liners from Sue Sylvester on the hit musical comedy TV show Glee, on Fox network. For those who have never seen or heard of Glee it is a show that focuses on a high school glee club at the fictional William McKinley high school in Lima, Ohio. This show is known for the up to date fads such as celebrity Lady Gaga and as this weeks special appearance Britney Spears as well as past pop culture phenomenon’s. The show has been a sensation among all ages, genders, race, etc., due to the fact that everyone can relate to something within this show, even through the overload of comic relief. Teen pregnancy, bullying, the price of popularity, are just a few issues that are covered. Although they are covered in a comical manor, its pretty obvious that these are real situations that happen in today's society.
The director of the glee club is Mr. Schuester, and his arch nemesis and coach of the Cheerio cheerleaders is Sue Sylvestor. She is a personal favorite character of mine! This show is just more than a show, it is incredible how successful Glee becoming and how it is growing. The songs from the show are available for purchase on iTunes and usually have a very great rating after an episode premiers and reaches within the top 100 chart. There is also rumor of a book series and a Broadway production of the show. I have a feeling that this show has a great chance of surviving for a long time. There are always going to be newer and more interesting fads and topics out there for the Glee cast to perform! This show never provides a dull moment and will keep you wanting more. I know I do!
